Iran Endocrine Society Meeting
The Iran Endocrine Society Meeting was held on Thursday May 10, 2018 in the meeting hall of Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute (EMRI) in Tehran with the presence of members of this society.
In this meeting, Dr. Bagher Larijani, Director General and Chief Scientific Officer of EMRI emphasized that as a result of the aging of population, osteoporosis have become a prevalent health condition which needs to be considered in health policy decisions.
He also called the need for a valid and easy to reach tool for measuring the risk and early detection of osteoporosis in societies.
Dr. Larijani drew the attentions of the meeting to POCOsteo project saying that this project concerns with the development, clinical validation and preparation of a Point-of-Care tool for identifying individuals at risk of Osteoporosis.
He remarked that the device has employed the latest technologies and methods in the field of genomics and microfluidics.
Pinpointing to the fact that the BMD tool are not available in all health care facilities, Dr. Larijani said that
The POCOsteo device is portable, less costly, and can be used anywhere, even in rural areas which is very suitable especially in Iran where a huge population are living in rural and deprived areas.
He also said, “POCOsteo has be awarded as the best research project funded by an international body in 2017 by Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
He continued: “The project is supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and is a joint multi-centric collaboration among different industrial, academic and clinical partners”
Dr. Larijani also referred to the visit of Professor Jan Vanfleteren, Coordinator of POCOsteo Project in University of Gent on February2018 to visit the infrastructure and facilities of EMRI for contribution in the clinical evaluation phase of the project.
